I'm building a computer and I'm not too sure what would be overkill and what would be not efficient enough?

I'm thinking going with the new i7 processor

i7-950 8 MB SmartCache 3.06 GHz 4.8 GT/s QPI 4cores
and get 6GB of Ram (Then I heard PC will only read like 3 GB)
and a couple fast RPM hard drives...

How do all these components play a role in Pro-tools or digital audio recording in general? and Will it benefit any by getting 6GB of ram when the PC only reads 3?

A 32 bit OS has a 3.5 or something limit on RAM. what you need is a 64 bit OS. I'm running 64bit Win 7 with 4GB. Anything over 4GB is a bit overkill IMO. But whatever floats your boat.

The real benefit comes when you run 64bit programs on a 64bit OS. I'm running 64 Reaper it ****ing flys, it loads up in like 2 seconds on my Quad.

would I still be able to run my regular 32 bit programs like Reason? or do all my programs have to be 64bit as well

Some will run on a 64bit OS and yield 32bit results.. but some programs will not. Depends on the software. They usually tell you if it's compatible w/ a 64bit system somewhere on the website.

I'm about to try to install Reason on my brother's 64bit OS, so i'll let you know if it works tonight if you haven't already found the answer by then. FL Studio and many VSTs work for him... so it'll probably work, but i'll find out for sure soon.

Yeah I ain't installed Reason yet, so far everything else works so. Even some programs that say they aren't compatible.

some people are successful runnin pro tools on 64bit os, but officially it's not supported.. which sux. digi people keep on saying they working on 64 bit pro tools... but i aint sure how far they @ right now. what i'd do is, build a pc as you wish, run it with any windows u want to 32bit and wait till right pro tools comes out.
