Sup FP,

Thought this would be a good discussion.

What steps are you actively taking in transitioning this from a hobby to a full-time career in music production?

First, tell us what your status is as of now (do you have any indie/major placements, or are you just starting out, etc)

Then tell us what you want to ultimately accomplish and what you're doing right now to accomplish that.

I'll go first:

I've been making music since about 2005. I've worked with several local artists here in Toronto, but no one major. The biggest thing we've done so far has been producing a track for one of Polow da Don's artists, signed to Zone 4. But it was more for demonstration purposes, to show people at the label what he's capable of.

What we want to do is produce pop music for established artists all over the world. What we're doing to accomplish that:

Continuing to polish our production skills
Looking for A-list songwriters
Looking for reputable managers
Sending material to artists' managers
Researching publishing companies, entertainment lawyers

Once we get a few things together, our next step is to contact someone in the Ceative department of a major publishing company who will hopefully arrange a collaboration with an already-established songwriter. Then with the finished songs, hopefully get a publishing deal.

What steps are you actively taking in transitioning this from a hobby to a full-time career in music production?

I'm strictly looking for style progress; talented musicians, graphic artists, animators, scientists, engineers. Music isn't really a career any more for the 'average' artist. If I ever release anything it would be something special.

*bump*

By doing the things I mentioned above, we just got a placement with an R&B group in the UK. They have a nice buzz right now. Just waiting for the signed agreement to be faxed back.

I know there's at least a couple other serious producers on here that are on the grind...

I'm just starting out I guess. I've been making beats since late 2006. Right now, I'm not taking any necessary steps in making this a career because I feel that I need to enhance my skills a little bit first. I'm making music pretty much everyday and practicing my a$$ off.

I live near Toronto and I make Hip-Hop/R&B and pop... maybe we can talk sometime Astar.

I've been making trax since 1990.. I've recently started organizing my music in an attemp to create a catalog. When I am done I am going to seek management. Unless you live in NY,ATL, or LA its hard to get placements...but not impossible

lol, nothing. It's sad because I know what to do and i'm just too tired of grinding. I just make sh*t for locals and charge for studio time now.

Two things that annoy me are people who are positive out of ignorance, and people who are negative out of bitterness. People who are neither usually get along with me and agree with most of what I say. People who are one of the 2 think I'm the other.

Promoting myself primarily online. Making as many contacts as possible wether that be A&R ppl or fellow producers or vocalists or whatever.

Also trying to improve my studio I guess. In that respect, money is everything.

Biggest placement so far is probably an official remix of Leggz ft. Gary Bardouille - Come Together on BornToDance records.
