why dont you just use recycle? i use reason 5 and couldnt tell you how to chop without recycle.
I used to use ReCycle but honestly I had the "banged out" version (if u understand what I mean) plus this new laptop so Norton would block that shit ASAP from loading up!
I'd say just shell out, and use recycle... I mean I use recycle, for some reason, idk why cuz i have a liscense and everything, it's stopped working for me...
And it's messed up my workflow ever since, especially because i have alot of samples and stuff i wanna chop now.
I'd say use the NN-XT though, it lets u control how much of the sample u want played and stuff.
Chopping Samples in Reason W/O recycle . . .. type that into your search engine and there is a video on FP that might be useful
For reason 5 you should really check out the kong for your sampling.
In the drum programmer there's the NN-Nano and the Nurse Rex.
Using the mute and link in pad grouping you can "wire" your samples to mute out or activate other samples.
If you use the Nurse Rex you can do some pretty interesting shit with the chunk triggers in the hit type box.
In the NN-Nano you can open up the sample and manually edit the audio file yourself.
For a ghetto mpc sort of set-up I normally;
- create a combinator
- create a mixer inside the combinator
- create 4 kongs
- use the combinator programmer to set up the 4 combinator buttons; link those to the solo/mute (your preference) of each kong mixer channel. (This is so you can quickly switch your sample bank well playing whatever midi you are using)
I use the kong pretty much only for sampling and drumming; for chopping small things up like vocal clips I use the NN-XT, and for "digital scratching" I use the NN-19.
honestly though, if you really wanna have full control over your samples and how they hit and affect one another, you should check out ableton. Rewire is your best friend.
enjoy
Check out Da *MUSIC*
that video is for record not reason 5.
I use Recycle, its the only way I know how to chop up samples...Unless you use the NNXT which can be wayy more time consuming because you have to slide each slice and adjust everything,,etc...Like @Ace2CWB said, stack sum paper and invest. If not ask a friend or sumn to borrow to install. Easy.
If you want to use your "banged out" version turn off your internet completely then, temporarily turn off norton, when your making beats. Then once your done, turn norton and the internet on.

I just use the NNXT to chop & slice, it works fine for me, why use another program? either way Reason 6 will have all 3 features in it anyway as a standalone studio.
