Counter melodies, melody to compliment main melody

Whats good,

Recently i have been struggling with extra melodies, e.g. when i have a really sweet melody, i dont know what to add to it to make the song more enjoyable

are there any lessons i can view that i can learn a thing or two from?
 
look up counterpoint and treat the process as the reverse - i.e. you have a complex melody and you want to add a simple melodic layer to it that contrasts yet harmonises with it
