What EXACTLY is stereo imaging?

Kinda like panning, but it deals with depth. Creates the illusion of speaker placement within a mix. That is how I understand it anyway.

I'm unsure of what exactly it is too, I'm interested in learning whatever I can about imaging. I mess with basic stereo imaging and it does feel like the sound not only moves for left to right, but also front to back in a way. I feel like it's the only thing missing from my mixes. I can figure out the levels and frequency mixing pretty good, panning I'm not so good at (I'm okay).

[h=2]When is the right time to use stereo separation and stereo imaging?[/h]

When you simply want a wider sound somewhere (indiviual tracks or submixes), or a wider track overall (mastering).
But keep it in mind that too much can introduce phase issues.
One final tip, before I grab stereo imaging plugins, I'd first see if it perhaps can be fixed without the need for extra plugins, such as increasing the width in a synth if possible, or pan layers a bit to give a sound more spread.
