what do the weekend producers use to get those drums and snares to sound like they do in songs like " The Zone " ?

First thing to realize is that sample selection is extremely important. Having a "good" kick, snare, hat, etc right from the start is more than half the battle.

If you were asking about something else in the drums, can you be a little more specific?

Like any mixing, after sample selection it's all down to proper EQ, compression... and often for drums just a little amount of tube or tape distortion can do wonders.

Yes definitely - that was most likely down to the sample selection. They probably used more live sounding samples and perhaps layered several together to create the finished product.

clean samples, with some little reverb to create that live feeling that you are talking about,, reverb is to create the invisible room where the drum is being played in, meaning how long it take the sound to go out, hit the wall and come back to your ears. hard to explain but I hope this helped a little bit.

Just wanted to give a +1 to what BeatbyAS mentioned.

The right reverb can completely transform your drums. To get a more "live" sound, try small room reverbs. The contained sound will bounce back your signal and really create a completely different effect.
