I doubt that without knowing my scales someday I can do something like this : Ryan Leslie Plays Over "Lollipop" by Lil Wayne on SIRIUS - YouTube

NOOOOOOOO!!!! Its never a waste of time learning scales. Learn the important scales. The Major, minor, melodic minor and the modes that go with them. After that learn some pentatonic scales. From here you can pretty much make up your own. Theres hundreds of them but you can either make your own up after learning the fundamentals or pick the few out of the hundred you want to learn. Even then like I said even if you make up a scale, 2 - 8 notes or what have you, you will later find that the scale you made up is already a known scale that might exist already.
