thanks again for the advice everyone.

i really liked that first autechre track, the bassline was great and it was cool how it stayed the same for the whole song but everything else around it was moving.

oh yeah, and instead of starting a new thread, i'll just throw this in here.

does anyone know what chords these are on this?
i messed around with it and i think it's just f# minor then g major. but i don't know if that's right.

For some inspiration check out Orbitals "Out there somewhere" this track is almost half an hour long and evolves constantly.

Auterchre are also a great example of this. Often an entire track is one large phrase of music, although their music works in the micro and the macro so the same track could also be seen as being one bar repeated 600 times!

If you wanna check out some truly moving and developing melodies in Classical music check out Edward Elgar and Ralph Vaughan Williams. If you have 20 minutes free you must listen to this bleautiful peice by Vaughan Williams - Thomas Tallis - Unreal!

    The beat starts at 3:13.

It might help to map out songs u like on paper: how long each part plays for (in bars) and what the instrumentation is during any given parts. maybe even the length of notes in each part and when the fills come in.

The b**** in u makes u run for cover when I spit at u. Man to man zone Allen Iverson couldn't dribble through. Rapid-fire syllables. U gotta bribe me wit' a mil or 2 to keep me from killin' u with the lyrical.
