I'm putting this in it's own thread as I think it answers a lot of questions that I've seen and is a common way to come up with musical ideas.
Basically you're just having fun with playing music until something sounds good. You can do this with a looped backing track or with just the drumbeat or with nothing at all.
No need to be correct or anything; no-ones listening. Do anything you want, as long as it's fun.
You can do this to come up with melodies, drums, harmonies or anything really. The longer you can do it without it becoming boring the better so I would recommend pushing things a bit at a time till things are easier.
