What I do is I get my inspiration from somewhere else, weather its a record you want your music to sound like or a classic song. I figure what scale the melody is in,(You must train your ear to and have a decent music theory to achieve this. Then Play with it a lil to get the feel. Then from there restructure it to your own feel.
Confidence is key. The reason they have that "sound" is because they never strayed from their idea (at least not a complete 180 in concept) and people started listening to their music and now associate it with that artist. You'll find something, just gotta keep your ears and eyes open.
I Just Realized I was answering the wrong forum question. I was trying to help a guy who wrote that he's having a hard time trying to come up with melodies. but what you wrote is so true. I was just telling this female Artist I deal with something similar. I stated everybody will have opinions but when u feel in your heart and you are not a idiot who don't cherish their craft, You will be smart enough to know what you feel in your heart is right and you will start to carry that confidence in everything project you come across and soon the listeners will follow.
I have my own style, I don't care about what they do.
I also feel like just, brute practice is key. Building up a set of skills that allow you to produce more and more different kinds of sounds, with different moods and feels to them. your individuality will come through what you choose to use. that's why I feel like imitation is a good tool in building individuality - cause you have more to work with as you incorporate all that stuff into your own sound.

Sometimes, I've noticed that I make my best beats when I "hear" it all in my head (or even a snippet). The inspiration comes at the weirdest times though. When you listen to a lot of music, unconsciously, your subconscious mind picks it up. When you get "inspired", what you could turn out is usually a combination of different styles that is unique to you.
Developing your style also has to do with your taste and your choices in music. Try to experiment with weird instruments and drums. I don't feel that in music you have to really "try" to have your style. Your style usually shines through when you tweak a beat until it sounds like what you hear in your head. If you do this, eventually you'll see a pattern (your "style").
Listen to the producers you look up to and emulate to create your foundation. Once you learn the rules and have a foundation, jus have fun! Do all the weird quirky shxt that you can think of. A lot of cats are against emulation but then again, a lot of cats tracks sound like 3 minutes worth of recorded farts lol. If you wanna be DOPE and different, learn the rules from cats that know them, don't reinvent the wheel until you know what its purpose is
Music is like dancing. If you dance enough, eventually you find out what styles or moves you really love
Pay attention to my music and I'll return the favor.
