Question How to make angry/dark sounding hiphop music?

    Greetings to all in FutureProducers!,

This is my first post on FutureProducers so I hope its not annoying or that someone's already asked my question. I've started making hiphop beats for maybe a month, and it seems all my "compositions" sound happy or sad (I've created my beats using mostly major and minor keys). That's fine and dandy, but I'm struggling on how to make songs sound more angry, warlike, or something along those lines. My question is: Are there any specific keys, modes, chords, or chord progressions in which I can create belligerent type beats. I'm trying to go for a more 90s type angry type beat. No lex luger like type beats. For example, I'd like to learn why the song No More Pain by 2pac (Produced by Devante Swing) sounds angry/dark. I've learned how to play the piano part but I'm not sure what key its in or why it sounds dark. The same goes for another song by 2pac (under the alias Makaveli) called Toss it up. I've learned how to play the g-funk synth's melody but again I'm confused as to why the song itself sounds dark. I would post the links up but I'm a new member. Hopefully someone's able to help me. Thanks.

If you want something to sound angry, I suggest working in minor keys and then playing around inside the key. Experiment. Maybe you could put one note up a step just to see how it sounds. Diminished/Minor partials tend to sound angrier. The drums also play a key role in the feel. Maybe make them louder or faster, depending on the type of beat. Just experiment until you get what you like!
    Hope I could help

I think you need to learn more about intervals than scales.

Not saying scales aren't important but at least in the context of melodies, it's about the interval from one note to the next.

I'd also suggest listening to tracks that are down tempo and have a darker feel to em. Listen to what instruments they use and incorprate them into what your going for.

that's sad, because it means that you aren't even trying to be professional - professional carries two sets of baggage with it

    1) Set your own prices
    2) Commitment to ongoing learning in your field of activity.

Understanding what I wrote is part of the second set of PROFESSIONAL activities - complaining about it and making it seem like a joke is not being professional, it is being lame and lazy........

    Am-G#o

means moving from Am to G# diminished as a chord progression or sequence

    The notes are

    Am ~ A-C-E
    G#o ~ G#-B-D (the top 3/4 of E7)

Take control of your destiny now and start learning some real music theory rather than half-a-dozen tricks that everyone else already knows......

    I agree with Bandcoach.

Man if somebody says something you don't understand figure it out.

We're not talking in secretive cryptic code here, we're talking in basic musical terms that any "musician" who's even halfway serious should know, or take 5 minutes to learn.

I'm cool with giving advice where I can, I'm not also trying to be your google and your dictionary.
