How important do you think it is to layer up on a beat?

    Does every beat need it?

How do you know when enough layers of different sounds and keys, synths, etc have been added?

Just wondering how everyone feels about more complicated beats vs simple beats.

When it all starts sounding like atonal mud or when there is too much going on without any sense of direction.

Layer when you need it. No rules or anything.

Does it sound good enough? Then it is good. Is it missing something? Add something. As said - no rules.

I think another thing that can help if you can is to try to get a writer or rapper to lay something down to it. A lot of times you can really piece things together when you got the vocal in there and decide on what needs to be added or removed. But a lot of times it just depends on the track and the direction that you're going for. No rules really.

Layering is always a great way for getting a full sound but like anything else too much will ruin the mix. It's all about perception and the character of the sound your trying to achieve. If your mixing is great you can afford to layer more in most instances.

Can't say anything more, a lot of the greatest Beats are just simple Loop Beats

Very true. It's not about the beat. It's about the record.

Even layering doesnt make the beat anymore complicated, IMO some of the simple stuff sounds great because of the layers used to create the sounds. I personally layer a lot, it just helps me get a fuller sound especially with VST's, some can be a little thing by themselves so layering usually can fix that.
