How to figure out BPM for a synth

Do you play the synth and then tap tempo?
Or does it not matter as long as it is played the right way.

I always have my BPM set before I play anything.

Here's what I do on every project, set a tempo, turn on the click track and just play without anything in the track and that will give you an idea on how fast it's going to playback.

are you reffereing to the speed of arpggeator or lfo, or oscalation? or track speed?

Thanks alot. I ended up finding its best to set bpm first. Then use the synth.
