I feel like this is a very subjective thing. I find that you shouldn't go on what you think it should sound like but rather how you want it to sound. Don't be concerned with things such as what you MUST add. The best music for me comes from just layering sounds and seeing how each thing sounds. Certain things I use in every track such as a bass I do to add more warmth and density to my sound. It's all about finding what YOU think sounds good and applying it yourself and eventually you'll learn what to put into your beats on your own.
