Hey everyone..what do we mean by a two part, three part etc vocal harmony? what do we mean by singing a third above or fifth above the melody? thanx in advance :)

Two part harmonies are just two parts - like the Everly bothers. Three part harmonies are 3 parts - like the Supremes.

Harmonies are usually a third or a fifth from the lead vocal melody - or both if you are trying a three part harmony.

You usually need to tweak things a bit though if it doesn't sound right - and you don't have to follow the above either if you have another idea in mind.

As always, ep has the half of it.

harmonies can be anything, but of course the intent is to form pleasing sounds, rather than dissonance. However dissonance in harmonising is part of the pleasing effect, particularly when the dissonance is resolved, cleverly or simply.

The following is an example a melody in the major then transposed into the relative minor and 3 possible harmonisations of each. Using 2 high female voices and 1 low female voice or male voice.

The rules of melodic minor writing have been followed in doing these harmonisations which is why the F is only sharpened the once and the G is only sharpened when going to the A:

  • Raise the 6th or 7th only if it goes to a note above
  • Otherwise make it a part of the natural minor scale - i.e. the following it is below
