Fifth only in bassline ?

As long as I use inversions can I play whatever note is at the bottom as the bass or do I still have to use the root as some point? Im just trying to see if its common to do this?

depends on what aspect of bass line theory you want to pursue

play the current root of the chord actually means to play the note that is the designated bass of the chord, so the note which forms the inversion, i.e.
- root position means use the tonic of the chord
- first inversion means use the 3rd of the chord
- second inversion means use the 5th of the chord
as your bass note

other theories always insist on the naming note for the chord always being present regardless of voicing inversion used by other parts of the music (not very adventurous and somewhat limited, but there you have it)

other theories are more focused on how can I use scale knowledge to create bass lines that are interesting and progressive - this is the school of thought I subscribe to as a bass player, arranger and composer
