We all use them, but does anyone actually know what a great baseline is suppose to do? I feel like i have a couple good ones, but i made the by accident.. How can i make a great baseline a regular occurrence?

I learned pretty much from J Dilla and Pete Rock how to do basslines.
Like putting swing in them bassline-notes that goes along with the swing of the drums.

Nice! I like to listen to Dre's basslines. Im mainly just trying to figure out their purpose. I know you don't need to use them, I'm just trying to pinpoint what make the effective and i can't quite put a finger on it.

From time time I will copy my drum track to the bass track, move the notes into the right key, and then shorten, elongate or remove the notes that are there.
It is IMPERITIVE you learn scales. If you are trying to just sit down and bang out a bass line using only you ear, you will quickly encounter frustration.

A good bassline supports the main chords of a song providing that emotional punch that you feel. Just my two cents. Also basslines don't need to be complex. Usually you want to keep them as simple as possible unless your style calls for complexity.
you can do a lot with just roots, 5ths and octave bounces... read some bass guitar theory... I read somewhere that the bass should be an anchor or foundation for the chord changes - occasionally deviating but always bringing it home... players like bootsy collins, jaco pastorius very influential... my favourite bass player is a guy called gene perez... he's responsible for all those greasy bass lines heard in soulful house music...

then you have double bass...
Thanks for the input, I'm slowly understanding what it is I'm doing. Ive been making beats for almost three months and I'm teaching myself so I'm learning as i go along. When it comes to baselines i usually listen to different songs to see how their's work, and then i try to duplicate the effect on my tracks.
