70's prog/rock/psych bass sound

I've been listening to a lot of not so popular and rare 70's bands lately and I've noticed there's some nice basses played in the songs.
What I wondered is, what where common bass guitars back then? And are there any VST instruments that can achieve that sound or come close? (I tried out Trilogy but it doesn't really do it for me)

2:40 and so on should give you an example of what I mean.

Really good example of the bass sound I'm looking for. Nice song too by the way.

Can I add another song? :)

Jan Akkerman and Thijs Van Leer are geniuses. Just brilliant.

From what I know, Rickenbacker bass guitars were mostly used by 70's rock bassists. I really don't know about VSTs since I don't use them.

Jan Akkerman is actually my stepbrothers uncle. I've met him a couple of times. Good song by the way, but the bass in it isn't really the type I'm looking for. It seems more driven.

My bass VST's all sound like Seinfeld and hairy porn. I've tried to EQ and compress and all that, but I can't get my bass to sound anywhere near to what I want.

^ This is exactly what I'm after.

Oh God! This one is even better. PERFECT!

No shit  Haha that's terrific. So you are also Dutch?

Like i said, I don't use VSTs since I use Reason (Reason doesn't support VSTs as you may probably know). But maybe you should check the VST subforum

or even better, "list of VSTs" thread

I'd go with a Fender Jazz bass for Ten Years After (there's a pic of him playing a remarkably old one in 2009 on wikipedia).

Same sound for Bifferty.

Possibly a Ricky or a Gibson for The Fox.

Get a hold of Scarbees Bass from NI or just get Komplete 7.

Thank you. I am long time bass player.

I have Komplete 6, so no Scarbees, But I do have the Garritan GPO 3, JaBB 2, CaMB 1. JaBB has some good basses. Looking at K7 but a little while yet.

Yes, you should consider getting Scarbee and running that audio through Guitar Rig 4. Guitar Rig 4 is a guitar/bass amp simulation VST. It is included in Komplete 7 along with Scarbee bass. They have some classic bass tones in the area of what you're looking for and lots of nice effects. I would be surprised if you couldn't get a good 70s, psych tone out of that combo.
