Why do you use a compressor when designing bass

I see a lot of people use a compressor when designing their bass usually multi band compressor. What does it do to the sound and why use it?

If you have a bass that has a modulated filter, like a bandpass or lowpass filter, or certain other kinds of modulation you will get a sound that has a lot of changes in frequencies. The multi-band compressor can be used to bring back some of the frequencies so the bass still has high end/mids/low end at all times.

You use a compressor as an automatic volume knob.

Sometimes when designing bass you get certain frequencies that jump out more than others. Especially when filtering. A compressor helps alleviate that, making the sound levels more consistent overall.
