What scales are used for what?

What scale has a mellow theme to it?

I want to make beats like PND & The Weekend, And Jhene Aiko. What kind of scales do they use for their melodies?
 
both of these questions ask the same thing in different ways

and the answer is the same more or less

any scale/mode works for any type of composition - the limitation is not the scale but the way that you use it
