What is this instrument/sound?

I have to catch up on a bunch of these threads as I've been given some good info.

But still, can anyone tell me what exactly is this instrument?

It plays here in this song:

The Young and the Restless soundtrack - 34 - Lost (Long) - YouTube

Starting at 30 seconds. It's a string instrument for sure. Sounds like a violin but not quite. Or maybe it is one but with some effects. I hear it all the time. How do I achieve that sound?

I was composing a song that sounded similar at the beginning so I checked it out make sure it wasn't the same and then I listened in a bit and got curious. This is why I'm afraid to listen to music. I always hear sounds I want but can't reproduce because I don't know exactly what they are.

Any info? Thanks in advance.

so, nothing unusual here

that sound is simply a violin section played in what is known as lush, little vibrato

then we get cello's and violas playing the counter melody @ 0:54

Bandcoach, you are amazing. I will look into what this thing known as "lush" is because it's a kind of sound I think I will find quite useful.
