Viewing midi files

I saved a few piano midi tracks off the internet and tried importing them into both reason 2.5 (which just shut down) and cubase SE which made a track like it had imported something but there was no midi data in the key editor window. Am I missing something? I want to be able to see the midi notes in a piano roll type of window. help me out guys.

I've never had problems importing/exporting midi. I wonder what exact process you're going by...

I just go to File > Import > MIDI File on cubase. It does create what looks like recorded data on a midi track, but when i open the key editor, there are no steps recorded. Its not a cracked version I bought it at GC. I'm running it on a new G5. I tried opening the same midi file on garageband and it worked.
