Uses of sine (sound) waves.

^How do I change ths name
This is kind of a random question, but it's very important and I'm stuck.

Any of you guys know of any applications of sine waves in real life other than music? I don't mean like anything calculus related or anything related to algorithms or circuits. For example: censor beeps are sin waves, heart rate monitor beeps are sine waves, timer beeps are sine waves (I think), but those are the kind of answers I'm looking for.

Edit: Triangle waves or square waves are also acceptable.

most of those bleeps you mention are actually triangle or square wave or pulse width waves

as for real life uses not much that I can think of beyond analysis

Sonar maybe? Though I don't know for sure if they use pure sine waves for that.

And maybe for the very first video games like 'tennis for two'. I can imagine those first applications would use the simplest sounds as a proof of concept.

pong/tennis for two is a square wave

sonar tends to be a pulse wave (it is easier to synthesise in hardware than a sine wave is - it is essentially a flip flop with asymmetrical timing) as well

I'm loving all of these answers. I really like the sonar idea though, I just have to figure out how to make a pulse wave.
