hey man, I dont think there is really a very specific answer to your question because there are a lot of expressive sample libraries out there that could have been used to do this. this was done with some sort of sample library of orchestral samples.

...could have been done with perhaps a Kontakt library or any other type of sample library that had in-depth samples from a real instrument. you cant synthesize sounds like this, it's impossible to replicate acoustic instruments with a synthesizer as far as i am aware of. Ive heard people come close to say, a bass guitar, but theres just too much physics involved.
