Squashed Sound Filter?

I've been trying to look for a filter/parameter which creates this squashed sound effect. If it was a dial that was turned, on 0 it would sound like the source was behind a closed door in a seperate room. If it was on full the source would sound normal. So turning the dial is like opening the door.

I've heard this effect in many songs, if you need an example let me know.

You can change the corner of the filter (i.e. the cutoff frequency) raising it will make the sound seem more normal.

Of course you have two issues here
  1. you want it to sound like it is behind a door in another room
  2. you want it to move closer and become a source in the same room

for the first bit the lpf will achieve this (opening the filter up reduces the muffled effect)
for the second bit use some additional eq to move the sound in the front back plane - 2khz and/or 4khz cut to move it back, boost to bring it forward.
