Sound in movie scores that sounds like bats

In a lot of movie scores I hear a sound that sounds like lots of bats making noise together, and I think the sound is made by abusing a violin, but I can't find anywhere HOW it's made, and I can't find it in orchestrat libs either..
You can hear an example below(is from the Face/Off expanded soundtrack, track 21 Lazaro's Funeral)

Does anyone now how it's made?

I hear a couple of sounds in that sample. There's definitely a few buzzing fly SFX or something. You may be on the right lines with the violin - it nearly sounds like a glissando which is a sweeping of the finger up and down the fingerboard. In this case it's not strongly pitched, so play with only the edge of the bow and you get a sort of weak, pathetic sound which you can coax a few harmonics out of.

All you need is a junk shop violin. If you find a Strad, whatever you do, don't try and recreate this sound on it yourself! Hehe.
