Should all instruments be in the same key in a mix??

I'm working on a beat and i'm about to add another instrument to the mix. Should that second instrument be in the same key as the first? or can they be different?
 
Same key definitely, same notes no.

Try writing the second instrument as just chords that happen sometimes.

Or make it a counter-melody: it plays long notes when the first one is playing quick notes and vice versa
 
I like to leave the bass note out of chords and let the bass handle that. For example, bass plays root-5-oct and the chord plays 3-5-7-9. So the chord is actually a 3rd above the bass. Does that make sense?
