sample usage question

in trying to recreate a pro track (eptic - oh snap), i was surprised by how many samples / hits were interplaying in the track.
this made me lead to the conclusion that layering a bunch of samples is as important as layering synths in order to keep a track interesting. for example, in a build up, you just don't use one white noise sweep but you layer a few more risers on top of that.

in my last track, i added variation to my basslines and melodies, but my track was still pretty boring.

what i want to learn is:
- how massive are your sample libraries?
- do you guys really use a bunch of samples?
- i thought samples are essential to a track; am i placing too much importance on them?
- please elaborate how important samples are (eg ambience)
- types of samples? (right now i know risers / sweeps / chants; what other options do i have?)
