Remake original song?

Have you ever heard a song and sang/played over it with your own melody?
Assuming that your melody sounds really good and you really want to record it, what do you do in this case? Try to rewrite the song with your own chords/backing and create your own song on top? Or do you just rip off the original artist?!! (i hope not! hehe)

Or you just remake the original song with your own stuff in it and call it a remake or a remix?

When I remake my own tracks and lay an acapella on top of it, it'll be like this:

Crackaz In My Face - DJ Mc7 (Feat. MIMS)

*TECHNICALLY*, it's a mashup, but when you think of it as you made the beat, sent it to the artist and they record the vocals for you it's your own beat, thus you get the credit and artist gets featured credit.

If it's a remix/remake of a remake or remix, then you put your name. In this case, I remade AND remixed Apologize (which was remixed by Timbaland). Since he has no involvement in MY remake, it's "Apologize - DJ Mc7 (Feat. OneRepublic)".
