question about singing in tone with chords .

hello

i was just wondering is there any basic vocal theory information i should know for instance when people sing do they basically just sing in a higher octave of the regular notes and chords playing? and the vocals and keys stay all in the same note/pitch?
 
Maby do some googling on chords and scales, or maby do a search here on FP. Sorry, I don't have any nice links to post.

Basically to be in key a chord progresion and a melody will be using notes from the same scale.

im asking if there are any vocal tips on staying in key with chords and other notes this is more of a vocal based question like singing in harmony and accompanient a rhythm track.

do singers usually sing with in the same keys of the melody but in different octaves or do they sing in the 5th and 7th or is there no standard way?
