i am guessing to play fill-ins you play within the chord you pick.... (i am not sure if i am wrong let me know) SO........... if i played Cmajor (C,E,G) would my fill-ins ceom from that? so while Cmaj is playing, i can do E+G, or C+G, or E, or G, or C? etc???

nevermind, figured it out

Well, yeah, you can limit yourself to chord notes, but it is more interesting to use non-chord notes and chromatics notes as well.

To take your example of a C chord:

The first four bars are over a C chord the next four bars are a F chord.

The two sections are similar in many ways, except for the repeated use of the Bb in the second four bars in place of B natural.

Note the use of non chord tones and chromatic (out-of-key) tones to create a dynamic, moving line. Rhythm also plays a part, though this line would be equally successful played in 8ths or quarters.

great post bandcoach! When I have a 1-3-5 standard chord, throwing in the 2 and 4 every now and then really creates atmosphere.
