Metallic synths & staying in key.

Hi so I've recently been creating a lot of metallic synths with fm synthesis and with that , you get a lot of overtones that aren't multiples of the fundamental. So if I play a C there usually is a bunch of overtones peaking out that aren't C or G since that's a fifth up. When I eq those frequencies out I lose the metallic texture of the original sound. So my question is , If I leave those overtones in my synth , do I have to find out what pitch they are and make sure the overtone is in the key I'm in or does it not really matter?
