melody and harmony

Hey FP! i have another question here. How do you properly add a harmony to a certain melody? I feel like when i add certain chords to a melody, the sound does not come out the way i wanted to. idk if that makes sense lol. much appreciated guys!

Are your chords fitting the scale your song is in?
Are you working with differences in octaves?

There are certain plugins that do give you easy harmonies. Though, it'll pay off to know the actual theory behind it.
