Making Wonky Drum Patterns

Hey guys, I'm trying to make unique, off-color drum patterns for some tracks I'm working on. Not trying to bite off any specific artist, I like personally like that style. Here's an okay example of what I mean:

I've found that sampling non-traditional percussive sounds (doors slamming, pipe hits, keys jingling, shakers...so many shakers), EQing and compressing the hell out of them, and then making patterns in the wrong time signature (6/8, 5/4) works pretty well sometimes. But I'm interested to see if you all has any tips/tricks.

It all has to make sense in the end, think about the range of your track and where it meets with you emotionally. Does your drum pattern and the rest of your music do the same? If you can say yes then you have successfuly made a track in harmony. Let me know if you follow me <3

sounds like some video game beats that Ive heard....Sometimes I dont know how they come up with it..Sounds crazy to me.
