Layering sounds?

I was wondering some ways to layer a sound to make it fuller?

I know there's a couple ways to layer a brass hit.

But what are ways to layer strings, what it be just chording them or copy it a octave higher and lower??? a

nd is there any rule in how to layer as in find sounds that the original sound doesn't fill in the frequencies?

just copy the chords and use paste it as a different sound under your main chords. WHat i like to do it, use different chord sound, pan it to the left, use another chord sound, pan it to the right, but keep the volume of the main chords louder than the rest. and then just mix it here and there a little bit.

normally I build up orchestral layers in pitches - keep your double bass and cello playing the bass notes, then add a couple of violas and violins playing higher chords. I normally then use another viola to play harmonies, as I find it sits in the mix really nicely, and doesn't cut through as harshly as a violin but can still be heard better than a cello. Then perhaps use a string pad playing big chords underneath to fill out the sound a bit.
