Improving your instrumentation and music theory

Hey FP, i mostly sample but im trying to get more well rounded at this production thing, i recently tried to make an rnb track and it sounded off key, so how can i improve my ear, and get better at making melodies? Thanks FP

get a keyboard and keep playing up and down on the C scale.
as you get it down play different scales and octaves.

this will give you a sense of interval between keys.

get into chords also.
the more often you here them the easier it will be to know what belongs together. get an ear training program when you have the chance to do so.

perfect pitch or ear trainer could help allot..
