I don't understand chords

I've been ignoring this topic for awhile since rap beats only need melody lines and all that but I can't ignore it anymore!

I want to learn about chords and when to use them... why would you use this type of chord right here? Theres gotta be some type of theory behind chords instead of just pickin a random chord from chord house... Any help will be greatly appreciated! Thank you! I'm already planning on putting futureproducers.com on my thank you list when my cd gets done!

Music theory is a very broad topic. You might do better finding a website to explain the basics, then post some specific questions.

I googled "diatonic harmony", and the first link was this. It explains how to spell diatonic chords in major keys, and what their functions are in chord progressions. It should get you started.
