how to practice identifying FX

how can i practice identifying what kind of FX is used?
i received advice to reproduce the FX for myself.
at least if I know which knobs to tweak, I can play around until I get the right sound.

but a lot of times i don't have a clue at all what's making that effect.
where can i get started?

record a single melody (preferably piano) and then insert one effect. Any effect, doesnt matter.
from there, just dig into it, take the effect to its extreme and back and then make really subtle tweaks to hear what it can do on a small scale.
You will never know what an effect does until you jump in and take it for a ride :)

Easiest way is just to dick around with effects and play with all the knobs until you start getting an idea for what they do. Put in on a synth, put it on drums, put it on vocals, and just play around and see what happens when you start moving stuff. It might help to have a db meter and spectral analyzer running so you can see what's going on. If you're in FL, Parametric EQ2 and Fruity Limit are good. Limit will actually show you a waveform and and PEQ2 has a good spectral analysis.
