How to make simple bass sound

Hello I'm trying to product something similar to the bass sound in Nicki Minaj's - Pound The Alarm (youtube/watch?v=vdrqA93sW-8) The bass sound comes in around the 40sec mark, right after the intro. It seems like a simple sound and should be a preset, but I haven't found one that sounds as good and crisp.

I have nexus2 and massive as well as the operator in ableton. I found some presets that were similar but they seem to lack the punch, I tried eqing and compressing , but I just ended up making the sound muddy or softer.

1) Any tips on how to get that sound?

2) Is there something I am missing with eqing basses, I just always boost the lows and try to make it sound crisp. I am super new to producing, so any help here would be cool.

I wouldn't suggest trying to get your sounds a certain way with EQs and all that.. that is more for touching up a finished product. What you want to do is try to find the sound or sounds somewhere that already have the properties your are looking for. Thats all i got to say.
