How to layer effectively???

I see breakdown beat videos from top producers and I see they layer there kicks and snares.

I don't layer my kicks or snares.

I know I have good sounding kicks and snares and I'm pretty sure they do to.

So what are some reasons they layer their kicks and snares?

Do they just layer for a louder snare and kick?

I'm curious on how to improve my kicks and snares by layering.
Any advice?

If you already have nicely processed samples like vengeance or similar, there's not much point layering unless you feel a need to put your own stamp on a snare that's been used loads of times before by other producers.

If you feel that you don't want to shell out on sample packs, or you want drums that are unique to you, (like the famous KOAN sound snares) you layer your own from existing samples that are a bit rubbish by themselves.

Sometimes you might like the amount of low end a kick has but it doesn't have enough snap or punch so you layer it with another kick that has more of the punch you're looking for. Same thing with snares.
