How to get this sort of dense kick

Really fat, dense kick drum in this tune by the Arctic Monkeys. Curious to know how I can go about achieving a similar sound. Is it a number of layered samples, or just one great sample w/ a compressor and some sort of tape effect?

Any and all hints are welcome.
Thanks.

It's not a looping sample, it's a full recording, but they could have used multiple mics in that bass drum to capture different characters of the bass drum.
Anyway, I think the engineer have done a great job with the EQ in taming the kickdrum, which is what I think contributes the most to the dense sound.
Then some compression with some attacktime for snap and a shorter release time to exaggerate the rumbling body. Then some saturation I guess.

Definitely Distortion on it for that rumbling effect, scheps 73 from waves can achieve this sound very good.
Any other distortion plugins also I guess.

This is, as steefeh correctly identifies, a real kick drum being recorded in real time

No distortion: that is shell and skin resonance

This is being activated (struck) with a heavy felt beater on the kick pedal

The skin is fairly loose causing the additional rumbling you hear.

You can also hear the resonance of the shell adding to the sound (reverberation of the skin attack).
