How to get this popular "sound"

So I've been trying to get a sound like this for awhile. Forgive me if this sounds like a dumb question.



What I am looking for is the technique to create something like the first synth/pad that you hear in the beat at 0:00. Would you simply need to low pass filter your synth/pad/whatever to make it sound like this? You hear this a lot in R&B as well as a lot of stuff coming out of OVO. What are some techniques that YOU would use to recreate a sound like this?

That's a bass, not really a pad- the key is to play bottom octave notes.

Start by lowpassing a sawtooth wave and adding some portmento
 
sounds like saw pad, a lfo modulating the filter cutoff in the synth itself (opening and closing in synch with the tempo) and then a lpf on the whole sound
