How to effectively ROLL OFF in EQ?

I hear a lot of producers say they roll off around "blah to blah"

To me theres not a HUGE/ little to no difference.

I know what rolling off is but how do I roll off effectively???

Is there any sounds that uses roll offs the most? like kicks or snares?

rolling off is about taking a little out not a lot - it is the same advice I give for fx, you add the fx until you can just hear it and then nudge it back slightly to the point that you only notice it isn't there if you bypass.

same is true for eq as I apply it: roll-off until you can just hear it taking effect and then back it up just a notch - bypass the eq and you can hear it gone, but only because it is just noticeable

I know that others will swear by being aggressive and taking out as much as you can cope with before you lose the sound, but to me that is overkill - subtlety is the name of the game and makes for cleaner mixes in the long run

as for which freqs and which instruments - each track has its own requirements so I would be lying if i gave you a specific set of numbers
