How does one go about getting a "dark sound" to their beats.

watch dark movies, listen to dark music, have a sayonce and communicate with the dead, train yourself to become one with darkness. One does not simply enter into darkness after coffe and a tennis match. music is emotion. express it.

I make dark beats... Just check my soundcloud below.
Minor sub basses with augmented and diminished leads. Also simplicity. Pads and ethereal sounds picking up the gaps and lost moments in the music.
Download some horror/thriller movie soundtracks/actual movie music and use it to get used to the feel. Absynth will be your best friend.
Also, delayed harmonies create suspense and longing... brings the tone right down.

try using long notes, low pass filtering and play your instruments in a lower octave, make the song sound slower than its tempo. maybe throw some distortion, long reverbs and dub delays in the mix too.

totally... all of these things too. great production advice.

Actually most of that dark stuff in hip-hop/rap is made using progressions that move minor-diminished-minor-diminished, e.g.

Am-G[SUP]#[/SUP]dim-Am-Bdim-E[SUP]7[/SUP]-Am
