How do i make this beautiful synth?

alot of soundcloud producers use this type of smooth, atmospheric synth (like the crescendo @ the very beginning). and i know damn well its not a preset. how does one go about making this from scratch? and any idea what those chords are? it sounds like theres some kind of crazy modulation goin on to make those chords sound so watery. aw man. i gotta knowww! any thoughts?
