How to create a verse from a chorus or melody?

I am really good at creating hooks or little catchy melodies. The trouble I have is, how do I build a verse that can lead up to that melody. Whenever I try it starts sounding like a competing melody or really boring and forced. Any advice would be great!

Quick pro tip

Take your chord progression and cut it at the halfway point, now put the second half in front of the first half - new progression and hopefully new sounds/melodies will follow.

The verse should be the easiest part. You are simply removing elements/instruments from the chorus.

Always try to remember that a verse on an instrumental may sound very boring, you need to imagine a performer rapping/singing over the beat. Try mixing an acapella onto the beat to get a better feel of how the final product may sound.
