also, how to create the effect when the beat drops and it sounds like it is silenced then unsilenced in quick succession at 0:36?

First one: maybe you're talking about that distorted (a little) 808 bass sound?

About your second request: it's just an tape stop effect going thru gate effect (or even a automated volume fader) - you've described it quite well it's "silenced and unsilenced in quick succession".
