Tempo
This piece is slow, being 56bpm. Added to this there is a range of changes to the tempo or more often to the rhythm in each bar, so that it is not really a strict tempo groove, but a relaxed wander through the chords and the melody.
Interpretation
This piece uses a lot of added notes and smears between the written notes of the chart - mostly scale runs, but sometimes arpeggios as well. there are also some decorative features such as a trill to the note above and back or the note below and back. if writing something in this vein, you will need to allow for such interpretation and be prepared to play this in real time, as there will be no other way to really get it to work.

Other thoughts on harmonic concepts in play
Chord [sup]b[/sup]VI is a substitute for chord i in most cases
The progression is using all 3 forms of the minor: natural, melodic and harmonic
In some cases we could extend our concept of minor to the minor modes such as the dorian and the phrygian, but this only serves to cloud the issue of what is happening from a functional harmony perspective.

Melodic analysis
There is a lot of melodic repetition within different rhythmic groupings, evident when you view the lead sheet at length. What is not evident from the lead sheet is the liberties that the players take with the chart: there is a lot of rubato as well alteration of the notated rhythm to fit a different interpretation of the melody, most of which can be traced back to the rhythm used in the descending line in the 7th bar.

The descending line D-C-B-A-G- first seen in bar 3 is repeated exactly at bar 12 and bar 34 and then at bars 7 and 38 with an E added in front: E-D-C-B-A-G. It is mimicked at bar 16 and bar 18 as E-D-C-A, at bar 20 as E-D-C-B-G, at bar 21 as D-C-B-A-F. This theme then reappears at bar 34 and bar 38.
This line, especially as it appears in bars 7 and 38, is used in the tune Friends and Strangers, originally written by
David Oliver and subsequently covered by
Ronnie Laws and
Dave Grusin amongst many others.
In spite of all the colour tones in the chords, the melody itself is very much stuck in the natural minor for the first 23 bars; it is the juxtaposition of the plain natural minor melody with the harmonic underpinnings that create the active, tension producing features of this melody.
Non-chord tones abound in this melody, providing tension in what could otherwise be a pedestrian melody (move all of the non chord tones to the nearest chord and hear the difference for yourself):

At bar 24 we see our first non scale tone - F[sup]#[/sup] - this is part of the underlying D chord and is also a tone found in the melodic minor. the E[sup]b[/sup] found in bar 25 is a modification of the line to fit the underlying Fm[sup]7[/sup] chord.
Interval use
On its own interval use does not tell us much, however, a quick count identifies that this melody like most, uses a large number of 2nds in comparison to any other interval (all analysis from this point on ignores interval direction, as there would be many more chains as a result of including direction):

Interval continuation (what notes follow what notes) is a better key to identifying the underlying melodic motives. Some would suggest that this is a direct application of Markov chains and they would be correct.

The following section goes deep into interval sequence theory and predictive probabilities. The surface information that can be gleaned from this is very useful, however. The greater the number of times a sequence of intervals appears, the more common it is in this particular melody.
As a result, trying to create similar melodies should be based around the same probability patterns.
As we analyse the note chains deeper and deeper, i.e. as we add more notes into the chain, the possibilities become very large and so certain chains become equally likely - there are more choices to follow, thus providing more variety. At the same time, the melodies created become more predictable as well. The most useful information can be found in the note chains of length 3, 4 and 5. The note chains of lengths 6-10 offer many possible continuations from the shorter length note chains.
