good software for composing?

I need a good software, to edit the sounds, and for
composing songs from loops made on a synth. I personaly prefer hardware, but for composing I've figured out the software is easier to use.
I don't have much experiences with computer software except for ACID, Wave Lab, Saw Plus and Cool Edit Pro.
Are any of these any good?
What's the most often used software?

Is ACID any good?
What about Wave Lab? (for editing sounds)

Thanx.

-you should use whichever one you think is prettiest and easiest to use. I don't think any one has far superior functions over the next. I use Sonic Foundry stuff. Decent gui, not too complicated, cross functionality (Edit Acid properties in SoundForge). I use to use Cool Edit, but it just didn't feel as right as SoundForge. Wav Lab is really versatile too, but I didn't like it's methods. You might want to get other opinions. Trying reading reviews somewhere, too.
