can any of you point me the direct of some good general game sound effects.

I'm particularly looking for footsteps and an elevator going down sound.

can anyone help me, please

check toad and peach, which are based on nintendo 8-bit synth.

In your case, you should go for toad, which is this drum rompler with some of those sfx.

For the 'blip blip' check out www.sidstation.com - if you prefer similar kind of software look for QuadraSID - you see the magic word is "SID" - named after the Commmodore 64 SID-chip.

SIDStation is amazing, QuadraSID is pretty good. The former might be a bit expensive for someone just looking for "some blips and bleeps", but it's a great synth.

although im not sure i can advocate it here, try using an arcade emulator called mame...many games(some of them public domain) give you the options of doing a soundtest... just record the output of the program and you can find crazy stuff...from beeps..to perc...to fm sounds
